The Kaplan cottage is an old farmhouse that looks its age...you almost expect to see a long-handled pump next to the kitchen sink, and a horse-drawn cart would not be out of place in the shed. This property abuts the outer fields of the regional high school campus; they are separated by a fence (no gate). It has a large yard with some shade, but no deck or porch. The cottage itself has a large living room with dining area, kitchen, double-bedded bedroom, and bath on the first floor. The living room walls are, in the oldest cottage tradition, only the inside of the exterior walls. Support 2x4s and cross-pieces make “shelves” for paperbacks and sea shell souvenirs and there are built-in window seats. The rather steep and narrow stairs, built for the smaller feet of generations ago, lead to three upstairs bedrooms. With nearly no landing, the rooms open almost directly into the stairwell – consider a gate for little kids. These bedrooms have an assortment of cots and single beds, and resemble the sparceness of a youth hostel. This place can be a lot of fun for anyone who remembers when cottages were little more than shelters, but despite its size, it is limited to 8 people. It is just a mile to Nauset Light Beach (Atlantic), and only a short walk to meet the shuttle bus at the high school to ride the rest of the way to the beach.
