The Grandjacques cottage was remodeled several years ago, adding an airy upper living area with French doors out to a second-floor deck with a peek of the bay. This large room is divided into living, dining, and kitchen areas plus a lavatory (sink and toilet). The downstairs, which itself is one story up from the ground in the back of the cottage, has three bedrooms and a bath with glassed-in shower. Two bedrooms have sliding glass doors to balconies for a woodsy view. The cottage is accessed from an outdoor stairway that enters at a wide landing from which you can continue up to the living area or go down to the bedrooms, much like a split level. (The stairs are too wide for a gate and the railing along the side at the top is openly constructed; a small child could crawl under it. Some parents may also consider the elevated balconies outside most rooms to be too much of an invitation to a very young child’s imagination.) The cottage is only 1/10 mile from Burton Baker Beach along a dirt road, and this beach is thought by many to be the most pleasant bay beach in Wellfleet, with its wide expanse of sand, salt-water wading-pool inlet at high tide, and view west over Great Island to the sunset.
